October in The Vegie Patch + Leaf Curl + Citrus + Cookies

Beautiful mauve poppies in the Edible Backyard potager

As the soil and air warm this month, growth boosts away. Excitement is high, such a good vibe to live our lives by, but lets temper it a tot with wisdom. Don’t rush into planting summery stuff on the first fine day.

The big gamble in October is kumara and pumpkin. Both crops need to get in ground as soon as poss for a good long season of growing, but not so early that conditions aren’t right and they crap out in the cold + wet.

If they flop – c’est la vie … you aren’t the first gardener to get over excited and shoot out the gate before the guns gone off. Just buy seedlings in to replace the ones that got ruined and tick it up to experience.

Lets have patience my friends – we await the goldilocks moment together.

Yours in the earth, ❤️ Kath

    Hi Kath,
I really enjoy getting your emails and learn something new every time I read them. 🙂
I use salt around my raised vege beds and it’s taken 4 years to stop the kikuyu growing in the beds but hey with time it’s worked. Good to know where you can buy in bulk. Thanks for your emails. Keep them coming. 🙂

    • That’s such awesome news for kikuyu sufferers Christine – thanks for sharing! The main approach with a weed is to stay calm, keep the war out of it and quietly and steadily persist… nice job!
