And Now for the Pumpkins…

Another gambit to run fellow food gardeners – this time with our pumpkins/ squash. See that stem – still some green on it, well that fruit needs to stay on the vine until the stem is withered and dried up. The longer on the vine the deeper orange the flesh and the sweeter tasting it gets; improves storage too.

Keep something nice and dry underneath to prevent rot where it touches the ground. Anything will do – old ponga ferns or bracken fern are excellent. Your aim is to beat the frosts, but get the maximum ripening on the vine. Daring stuff this food gardening…
